Public playgrounds need to be certified for playground safety to meet the criteria of the NZS 5828:2015 standard. Townsend Reserve, uses Bounce Bark® Chip & Eco scree mulch, for a natural safety approved recreational space.
Townsend Reserve, located in Rangiora, has recently undergone significant upgrades, integrating modern, safe, and aesthetically pleasing playground equipment and landscaping improvements. City Care Property, in collaboration with Waimakariri District Council and Azwood, successfully completed the project, providing the community with an enhanced recreational facility. This case study outlines the project’s execution, challenges faced, and the contribution of key partners.
The Townsend Reserve project commenced shortly before Christmas and was designed to be a 12-week program. Despite the typical disruptions associated with the Christmas period, including planning and logistical challenges, the project was strategically managed to ensure timely completion. The playground was operational by Easter, providing a much-anticipated recreational space for the local community.
The installation of the new playground has been warmly received by the community. The reserve now serves as a vibrant hub for families, children, dog walkers, and nearby schools. The enhanced facilities have provided the community a renewed sense of ownership and pride. The project’s success is evident through increased community engagement and utilisation of the space.
City Care Property engaged Azwood for their expertise in playground safety surfacing and landscape mulching. Azwood’s role was integral, supplying Bounce Bark® Chip for the playground equipment areas and Eco Scree mulch for the gardens. The Bounce Bark® Chip, certified to NZS 5828:2015 standards, ensures safety and compliance with Waimakariri District Council requirements. Utilising Azwood’s specified products across the council’s playgrounds ensures uniformity, simplifies maintenance, and guarantees safety for all users.
The collaboration between City Care Property, Azwood, and the Waimakariri District Council was seamless. Azwood’s straightforward and efficient communication streamlined the process, allowing for proactive issue resolution and timely decision-making. The blower truck application method for the Bounce Bark® was particularly effective, ensuring quick and even distribution of the material under the playground equipment.
City Care Property’s decision to involve Azwood was based on their proven track record and alignment with the council’s standards. The robust selection process included extensive consultation with the architects and the council, ensuring that Azwood’s products met all necessary criteria for both safety and aesthetics.
The principal challenge faced was the timing of the project over the Christmas period. The temporary cessation in operations required meticulous planning to ensure continuity and mitigate any delays. By maintaining open lines of communication and carefully scheduling work, the team effectively managed to transition back on-site post-holidays without significant setbacks.
The Townsend Reserve playground project stands as a testament to effective collaboration and strategic project management. City Care Property, Azwood, and the Waimakariri District Council have collectively delivered a high-quality recreational facility that not only meets safety standards but also enhances the community’s recreational experience. The success of this project underscores the importance of choosing reliable partners and maintaining efficient communication throughout the project lifecycle.
This case study highlights the significance of community-centric development and the impact of thoughtful planning and execution. The Townsend Reserve playground is now a cherished asset, reflecting the collaborative effort and commitment of all parties involved.
